Revolutionary Enterprise Search Engine Developed

InfinityV3 Honoured by US Analysts Gartner as Innovative, Impactful and Intriguing

Software company Columba Global Systems has received a globally recognised accolade after developing a revolutionary enterprise search engine which influential US analysts Gartner have singled out as being significantly different.

Columba, a leading provider of intelligent search and fuse technology for organisations and enterprises, today announced that it has been listed among “Cool Vendors in Master Data Management, 2010″ by Gartner.

The prestigious report acknowledges that the InfinityV3 platform specialises in intelligent data fusion, and can search, retrieve and fuse multiple data sources from within the enterprise and across the web, including hidden web and archived files.

Each year, Gartner Inc. spotlights strategic technologies and trends that have the potential for significant impact on the IT landscape in the next three years and that enable users to “do things they couldn’t do before”. This year, only three such awards were made in Columba’s category.

InfinityV3 accesses data sources across an entire enterprise and the web, as well performing deep analytics into archived pages and login-protected hidden web pages. The resultant composite “golden record” produces a single-view comprising multi-format files including audio-visual material, real-time and archived radio and TV news, blogs, podcasts, news-feeds, digital telephony, emails, intranets, web searches and graphic images. InfinityV3 also returns this “golden record” addressing 13 languages using four different alphabets.

Norm Hosken, CEO of Columba Global Systems, said the esteemed report was an affirmation of InfinityV3’s eminent position in what Columba calls “intelligent data fusion”.

“Gartner’s accolade acknowledges that our product has significant impact in multi-entity master data management and more,” Mr Hosken said.

InfinityV3’s main target market to date has been in homeland security, law enforcement and intelligence however there is now growing interest in other public sector social and healthcare applications and more recently, private sector financial services and telecommunications industry “single customer views” solutions.

Gartner Inc.’s report hailed the Columba’s solution’s ability to establish relevance of data in the composite by employing “non-exact” or “fuzzy” matching across its intelligent search and retrieve actions, allowing InfinityV3 to retrieve misspelled or erroneously labelled data relevant to the original search, which is not ordinarily found.

NASA to launch human-like robot to join Space Station crew

NASA will launch the first human-like robot to space later this year to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station. Robonaut 2, or R2, was developed jointly by NASA and General Motors under a cooperative agreement to develop a robotic assistant that can work alongside humans, whether they are astronauts in space or workers at GM manufacturing plants on Earth.

The 300-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. R2 will launch on space shuttle Discovery as part of the STS-133 mission planned for September. Once aboard the station, engineers will monitor how the robot operates in weightlessness.

R2 will be confined to operations in the station’s Destiny laboratory. However, future enhancements and modifications may allow it to move more freely around the station’s interior or outside the complex.

“This project exemplifies the promise that a future generation of robots can have both in space and on Earth, not as replacements for humans but as companions that can carry out key supporting roles,” said John Olson, director of NASA’s Exploration Systems Integration Office at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The combined potential of humans and robots is a perfect example of the sum equaling more than the parts. It will allow us to go farther and achieve more than we can probably even imagine today.”

The dexterous robot not only looks like a human but also is designed to work like one. With human-like hands and arms, R2 is able to use the same tools station crew members use. In the future, the greatest benefits of humanoid robots in space may be as assistants or stand-in for astronauts during spacewalks or for tasks too difficult or dangerous for humans. For now, R2 is still a prototype and does not have adequate protection needed to exist outside the space station in the extreme temperatures of space.

Testing the robot inside the station will provide an important intermediate environment. R2 will be tested in microgravity and subjected to the station’s radiation and electromagnetic interference environments. The interior operations will provide performance data about how a robot may work side-by-side with astronauts. As development activities progress on the ground, station crews may be provided hardware and software to update R2 to enable it to do new tasks.

R2 is undergoing extensive testing in preparation for its flight. Vibration, vacuum and radiation testing along with other procedures being conducted on R2 also benefit the team at GM. The automaker plans to use technologies from R2 in future advanced vehicle safety systems and manufacturing plant applications.

“The extreme levels of testing R2 has undergone as it prepares to venture to the International Space Station are on par with the validation our vehicles and components go through on the path to production,” said Alan Taub, vice president of GM’s global research and development. “The work done by GM and NASA engineers also will help us validate manufacturing technologies that will improve the health and safety of our GM team members at our manufacturing plants throughout the world. Partnerships between organizations such as GM and NASA help ensure space exploration, road travel and manufacturing can become even safer in the future.”

Next generation SBRT for lung cancer with ground-breaking 4D Image Guidance

New technologies enable accurate, non-invasive lung tumor treatment without additional intra-fraction radiation imaging

Elekta has introduced an advanced solution for treating lung tumors that enables doctors to visually confirm the tumor’s position during the breathing cycle. This new technology treats the lesion with a continuous radiation beam, increasing therapy accuracy while using less imaging radiation during treatment delivery.

Lung tumors have been among the most challenging radiation therapy targets because the patient’s breathing causes tumors to move. New research has shown that the lung tumor shifts position from day to day during the course of treatment (baseline shift).(1) Doctors often have had to use external skin surface markers or implanted markers to estimate lung tumor position during the breathing cycle and then apply the beam only during certain points in the patient’s respiration. These strategies require complex, time-consuming planning and delivery, and prolong treatment with an inefficient stop-start (i.e., gated) beam delivery.

“Elekta’s XVI Symmetry(TM) and XVI Intuity(TM) completely change the approach when it comes to the treatment of lung tumors,” says Dee Mathieson, Senior Vice President, Oncology Business Line Management. “Symmetry provides tools to manage shifts in the relative positions of the tumor and organs-at-risk during the respiratory cycle, and Intuity ensures that not only is the tumor’s position accounted for, but also the position of nearby healthy critical structures. This contributes to a more patient-friendly and safe treatment.”

Intuity and Symmetry were developed in collaboration with Elekta’s clinical partner, The Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AvL), in Amsterdam. Both XVI tools are designed to significantly enhance the clinician’s confidence in aggressively treating cancer, while limiting undue exposure to healthy tissues. The results can lead to better patient outcomes and quality of life.

XVI Symmetry and XVI Intuity are feature sets of version 4.5 of Elekta’s X-ray Volume Imaging (XVI) package of software solutions for Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). XVI 4.5 recently received 510(k) clearance and CE marking, to enable sales and distribution in the United States and Europe.

XVI Symmetry — Managing Respiratory Motion

“Traditional external markers in lung cancer radiation therapy don’t account for baseline shifts of the tumor throughout the course of the treatment sessions,” says NKI-AvL’s Jan-Jakob Sonke, Ph.D., who with his colleagues developed the technology behind Symmetry.(1-4) “Symmetry captures image data during the breathing phase and performs sophisticated computations to provide 4D data. This data helps to visualize the tumor position in each phase of the respiratory cycle to arrive at an average position of the tumor for each treatment.”

The benefits are accounting for baseline shifts and the ability of the physician to treat using reduced “margins” (i.e. better fit of dose) around the tumor — by virtue of enhanced knowledge of the tumor’s position on a day to day basis.

XVI Intuity — Image Guidance for Both Tumors and Critical Structures

The key to safe, effective radiation therapy is often to maximize the dose to the tumor, and to minimize the dose to critical structures, or organs-at-risk. Imaging technology integrated in Elekta IGRT systems has revolutionized the physician’s ability to achieve this goal.

XVI Intuity extends image guidance by better enabling critical structure avoidance, which allows doctors to understand the positional relationship between the target and organs-at-risk. This ensures that anatomical changes and corrections to set-up errors have not inadvertently put critical structures into the radiation beam’s path.

Mobile virus MMS Bomber rampant, millions of mobile phones in China impacted

Recently a new mobile virus named “MMS Bomber” has run rampant in China, and millions of Chinese mobile phones were impacted, reported Beijing Business News. The National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China has alerted mobile users that the targets of the virus are mobile devices with S60 3rd OS, mostly Nokia and Samsung smart-phones.

The virus is disguised as an application; once installed, the virus will automatically connect to the internet and send MMS containing a malicious URL to random mobile phone numbers without the user’s awareness, and result in finance losses to mobile users.

The virus was first captured by the Mobile Security Center of NetQin Mobile Inc., a leading mobile security service provider, in early February. The company’s statistic shows that at least 100,000 mobile phones were infected up to now. It’s notable that the virus has defence mechanisms. Once infected, the virus will disable the system management program on the mobile phone, and mobile users will not be able to uninstall the virus, says Dr. Zou Shihong, Chief Scientist of NetQin. NetQin has now launched the latest Mobile Anti-virus 3.2 multi-language version for S60 3rd OS, which can scan and remove the virus successfully. What mobile users need to do is to download the NetQin Mobile Anti-virus 3.2, install and update to the latest virus database to get protected.

Gartner reports smart-phones represented 14 percent of total mobile device sales in 2009, and are predicted to reach 38 percent by 2013; meanwhile, the mobile application market will reach $17.5 billion by 2012. By then, the number of mobile application downloads will have also grown to nearly 50 billion from just over 7 billion in 2009, according to Chetan Sharma Consulting latest report. The explosive growth of mobile technology and applications has made mobile devices an enticing target for hackers and mobile security threats. As more mobile devices are used to store personal and professional information, the more they are at risk for security threats.
